Describe your background, interests, and vocation.
I am Pittsburgh native who cherishes outdoor adventures all over, but specifically in Western PA. As a mountain biker, trail runner, hiker and backpacker I frequent many trail systems and value their place in my life. I have contributed may hours of my life building and maintaining trails in the Pittsburgh area. Restoring biodiversity with native plants is also something I am also extremely passionate about. I work at the University of Pittsburgh and received my Master’s degree from Pitt as well. I live in Shaler with my husband and our dog.
Why would you like to be on the RCTC Board?
As someone who views herself as deeply connected to Mother Earth, I understand in my heart that conservation and preservation of our green spaces in this day and age is a must! Promoting biodiversity with native plants, experiencing the natural world through hiking and backpacking and getting outside as much as possible, in as many ways as possible, are some of my favorite things in life. It is these passions that align so well with the Rachel Carson Trails Conservancy’s mission, that make me a wonderful fit for the Board of Directors and Officers.
As a native Pittsburgher and a current resident of Shaler Township, I feel extremely fortunate to have the Rachel Carson Trail so close to home. I completed the Rachel Carson Homestead Half Challenge in 2021 and attending the training hikes last Spring is an experience I will never forget! Feeling physically accomplished, conquering the mileage and the terrain surrounded by the incredibly supportive trail community is an atmosphere that I wish everyone can experience at some point in their life and I would love to be a part of the Rachel Carson Trails Conservancy future!
What makes you a good addition to the RCTC Board?
In my professional research career at the University of Pittsburgh over the last decade, I have directed and supervised several staff members, and I have also worked as part of a team and collaborated with many different types of people across many departments at the university. I know the importance of working together to arrive at a decision in order to progress an overall goal. I know how important communication is and I understand how to disseminate information and focus on what is important.
Additionally, in February 2022, I took over as the point person on the Rachel Carson Trails Conservancy Instagram account and as a backup on the Facebook account and have been attending the monthly Planning and Promotions Committee Meetings. I am enjoying creating original content, sharing about upcoming events, promoting membership and finding new collaborations on Instagram, like our March 2022 collaboration with Steel City Brand and their One with Nature, Rachel Carson T-Shirt. My knowledge of social media, while increasing our engagement and our reach makes me a great addition to the RCTC Board. Social media is the primary way that most adults consume news and content now and if leveraged properly, could help us spread knowledge about our conservation efforts, increase membership numbers and so much more!
