Rachel Carson Trail Maintenance Day (Log Cabin Road, Apr 22, 2006 from 08:00 am to 04:00 pm) by Steve Mentzer
Venture Outdoors, in conjunction with the Rachel Carson Trails Conservancy, has planned a maintenance day on the Rachel Carson Trail in preparation for the 34 mile Rachel Carson Trail Challenge. The upcoming Challenge will be the 10th anniversary, so let's put the trail in the best shape it's ever been. Tasks include painting blazes, pruning branches, cutting limbs, removing fallen trees, and clearing undergrowth. If you have your own tools, please bring them as we may not have enough to go around. Tools to bring: BOW SAWS OR PRUNING SAWS, long handle LOPPERS, WEED WHIPS, MACHETE, and the old manual HEDGE TRIMMER. A pick and shovel could come in handy. Please let Don know you'll be attending.
Harmony Trail Work Party (HT northern terminus, Apr 02, 2006 from 09:00 am to 03:00 pm) by Steve Mentzer
Spring maintenance on the Harmony Trail. We will be digging out a clogged culvert that crosses the trail. Meet at Route 910 parking area in the valley a half mile west of Route 19, Wexford. Bring shovels and other digging implements if you have them; we have extras but it may not be enough to go around.
Trail Maintenance Seminar (REI Pittsburgh, Mar 22, 2006 from 07:00 pm to 08:30 pm) by Steve Mentzer
Here in Southwest Pennsylvania we have some of the best trail networks in the country with three National Trails right in our back yard - but they need your help. Bob Tait, the founder of the Butler Outdoor club, and Patty Brunner, Chair of the Baker Trail, will lead this FREE informative clinic aimed to teach you how to get involved and what to expect at your local trail service project. And while you’re at REI, sign up for REI’s Earth Day service project in Frick Park!
Baker Trail Maintenance Day (Milton Loop campground, Mar 11, 2006 from 09:00 am to 04:00 pm) by Steve Mentzer
Help us re-route the Baker Trail! Our plan is to put the trail back down by Mahoning Creek (where it was a long time ago) and keep the road, Rt. 839, marked as an alternative to high waters. There is a good bit of work to do. Bring a lunch, water and lots of layered clothes. The focus will be clearing the trail -- there are a lot of downed trees, so chain saws are welcome. We'll also be collecting lots of trash deposited by high water during recent storms. Blazing is possible if the temperature permits. Contact Patty for more details.
Harmony Trail Winter Outing (HT northern terminus, Feb 04, 2006 from 01:00 pm to 03:00 pm) by Steve Mentzer
Celebrate Groundhog Day with us! Ski, snowshoe, or hike and admire the pristine valley where the trolley used to run, now a retreat for the wildlife. Hot tea, cocoa, and treats afterwards. Call or email for details and to sign up. FREE and open to all!
